Vine growing represents the main agricultural activity in the Italian region of
Marche.
Covered by hills over 40 percent of its extension, the area is particularly
suitable for the cultivation of grapes.
The valleys, running perpendicular to the
Adriatic coast of Italy to form a comb-like pattern, shelter the hillsides from
the cold nord-west winds which can sometimes blow this far south.
Great
red and white wines come from these hillsides: Rosso Conero, Rosso Piceno,
not to mention the everlasting Verdicchio from Castelli di Jesi.
